Battle Scars

He came back from war with battle scars
Cut deep into his skin
A golden medal on his chest
A reminder of where he'd been.

He came back from war a broken man
And when he closed his eyes
He saw rows of uniformed soldiers
Staring blankly at the skies.

He came back from war and tried to fit in
But he couldn't cope with the noise.
Bangs reminded him of death and loss
And hundreds of fallen boys.

He came back from war with memories
Of slowly pulling the trigger
His enemy's eyes begging for mercy
And of quickly becoming a killer.

He came back from war with battle scars
Cut deep into his skin
He came back from war with a heavy heart
And deeper scars within.
