Guest Author - Chris Higgins

Chris Higgins used to teach English and Drama but now is a full-time writer. Her most recent series is ‘The Secrets Club – Alice in the Spotlight’ which hit the shops in July 2012. Find out all about Chris and her love for writing.

If you could sum up The Secrets Club using just 3 words what would they be?

Fun, exciting and mysterious.

Did you yourself belong to a club while at school?

No, but I was part of a gang that played out together from about the age of 7 to 11 - this was a long time ago when kids were allowed to roam far and wide without any adults spoiling their fun!

What made you become a writer?

Nothing made me become a writer - it just happened. When I was at school I was always being told off by teachers for not listening because I was in a world of my own. That's because what was going on in my head was usually far more interesting than what was going on around me. When you write books you are constantly in a world of your own. I guess I should have listened to my teachers!

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from my children, my little grandchildren (I'm not really ancient, honest!), people I meet, kids I've taught, things I feel strongly about, things I hear about. Everyone and everything really!

What was your favourite book as a child?

The Famous Five books by Enid Blyton. Those kids had such adventures!

Do you have any writing tips for future young writers?

Write about what you care about. Start when you have a strong sense of your main character. Don't worry about planning - it's overrated. Once your main character develops, he or she will take over and do things you never intended them to. That's when you know your book's going well. Don't expect to get it right first time. Enjoy it. Take risks. Read, read, read. Write, write, write. Good luck and keep going!

Finally, what are your plans for the future?

Um? I don't make plans. I hope I'll spend lots of time with my growing family and on beaches and writing lots more Secrets Club books and other books too.
