Poem featured in: The Poet Within - A Collection of Teen Poetry
bloated, scarred from the acid.
I close the door.
I tie back my hair,
the escaping locks pleading,
their wisps an outcry for normality.
The toilet is my altar.
Head bowed, knuckles pitted,
grooves in two fingernails of my right hand in ode to its persistence.
The stabbing digits demand a sacrifice -
The bowl rings with the joy of another offering.
My body gives and I slump forwards
gorged for now on the knowledge of my emptiness.
I end the ceremony with the cleansing embrace of running water.
Unlock the door.
It is sacred -
no one must ever know.
