The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie
by Alan Bradley

Author: Alan Bradley
RRP: £7.99

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is about a eleven year old girl named Flavia de Luce. In love with chemistry, she has two bossy and annoying older sisters that don't appreciate her, and in turn get bombarded with her experiments. Their Father that is never there for them, as he is still grieving his wife after 10 years. Flavia has always felt apart from her family as they all have something that she doesn't: Memories of her mother. One night, Flavia is awakened by a fight going on in her father's study. The next thing she knows, there's a tall ginger stranger breathing his last words in her cucumber patch. Almost at once, Flavia's life changes, and as she investigates this strange death she puts her family, though at first this would have been enjoyable for her, in danger.

This book is extremely enjoyable, from the first line. One of my favourite parts is when Flavia's experiment on her older sister's lipstick goes wrong and she ends up with swollen lips!
This story made me think about the relationship with my family, and how love has different meanings to different people

So, in short, if you like mystery, a bit of danger and dark secrets (with a bit of humour thrown in the mix) This is the story for you!
