Skulduggery Pleasant
by Derek Landy

Author: Derek Landy
RRP: £6.99

This is book is the first book of a gripping series called Skulduggery Pleasant. These are adventure/action/fantasy books. Once you've picked it up and started reading, you will devour this book from cover to cover. I've never seen a book like it-in a very good way!

When Stephanie Edgley's uncle dies, she meets a strange man completely covered at his funeral. Later that night, a madman breaks into her house while she's alone, and she is saved by the strange man-who is a skeleton, a living, breathing skeleton.

Stephanie learns about the past and discovers that magic is real. A lot of you out there will be like, 'Magic? How baby-ish!' but no, it's not. Derek Landy turns it into something that you will be able to believe, maybe not in the real world, but most certainly in the fantasy world. Anyway, it's hard for Stephanie to not believe that magic is real if a living skeleton is talking to her about it. She takes in the adventure, seeks a new name (Valkyrie Cain) to protect herself, then realises something bad, something important, but definitely bad. Her uncle died this way. It was technically the skeleton's fault that her very close family was dead. What will she decide? What's the skeleton going to be to her? Friend or foe?

I absolutely LOVE this book! It's the best book in the world! The author is amazing and humorous/witty. He makes his main character what a lot of you would like: clever, witty, hilarious, brave. Your ideal superhero, but whether Stephanie takes on this skeleton as a friend or foe is for you to find out. Maybe she betrays him afterwards or later on in the series, or maybe she trained against him, hating him for her uncle's death. Read it and you will find out the thrilling ending!

I would recommend these books for perhaps 10 years old and older. I would give it 10/10 and I find it rather flawless, as everything in the book happens for a reason. Give it a go, you won't regret it, I promise!
