Shine
by Candy Gourlay

Author: Candy Gourlay

Shine is about a girl called Rosa, looked after by her father and Yaya, whom she met when she was little. She has a strange condition called the Calm that renders her mute. Because of this she cannot leave her house so instead she finds company from online friends. Throughout the book we learn her and her mother's story and the secrets her parents kept from her.

This book is jammed pack full of plot twists! Candy inserts chapters in the perspective of Rosa's mother, tying the story together. We fall in love with Yaya's motherly side and her fathers kind and protective ways.

Shine is easy just to pick up and read. This book would definitely be suitable for younger and older readers. I've never read a book about someone who is mute, so it gave me a good insight.
