The Hunger Games
by Suzanne Collins

Author: Suzanne Collins
RRP: £7.99

In a city called Panem, which is surrounded by 12 districts, lies the Hunger Games. The capitol of Panem has powerful dominance over each district. All 12 districts have a specialty that benefits the capitol. For instance coal mining, agriculture and harvesting. However people in the capitol, are filthy rich and contribute only a little. Each district is forced to select 2 tributes, a boy and a girl to represent their districts honour. It is nationally televised for every citizen to watch. Altogether 24 tributes are forced to battle until all 23 are dead and they are left with one person left the victor.

16 year old Katniss Everdeen has been providing for her family ever since her father had died and is illegally hunting in the woods. With her skills she is able to track and catch animals, by doing so she has been able to support her family. She also signs up for tessera which provides more food for her family but increases her chance of being called. Katniss was selected after volunteering for her younger sister Prim Everdeen. She knew Prim couldn’t survive out there. Along with her from district 12, was Peeta Mellark. Peeta is the baker’s son and his whole family works in the bakery. They are both mentored by Haymtich the only tribute form district 12 that had won in the hunger games before. Haymith is a little unsteady on all the liquor. So Katniss decides to rely on her skills and build up her strength.

When the Hunger Games begin she stays alone knowing she wouldn’t be able to team up with anyone. However she does team up with a small girl named Rue but unfortunately dies. Later on she discovers the truth and creates an alliance with Peeta.

Favourite part: My favourite part is when Katniss covers rue’s body with flowers in her honour after she dies also when Katniss drops the tracker jacker nest on the careers.

Susan Collins writes in a very detailed way enabling you to create a mind movie in your head. Also she writes plain short sentences but it gives off a lot of effect. By doing this she builds up the suspense, keeping the reader engaged. She took me on a journey a place that could never be real. I was really engrossed in to the book and couldn’t wait to read the next one. This book brought me to tears and also made me laugh. This book was one of the best books I have ever read.  I’ve learnt how harsh some people’s lives are and what they have to deal with everyday. I rate this 5/5. I recommend this to people who enjoy action, drama, romance.
