Katniss lives in a word split into 12 districts – and the capitol. Living in a small house in district 12 has not been easy, especially since her father as killed in a mining accident that left her to take care of her mother and younger sister, Prim. Sneaking out past the district fence to catch illegal game, and meet up with her best friend gale, is how Katniss makes a living. Keeping some for her and the family and selling some in the black-market called the hob; she earns whatever money she can. But she would never expect what happens next…
The reaping happens every year; this is where two children from each district are picked to enter the Hunger Games, a brutal survival task where there can be only one victor. When Prim is picked Katniss is devastated, she knows that little Prim will not be able to survive. Quickly stepping up to her role as head of her small family, Katniss volunteers as tribute to take her place in the games. Thrown into the capitol with her other tribute Peeta Melark, she has to prove that she is worthy and earn as many sponsors as possible. Along with her mentors Effie Trinket and Haymitch Albermathy, the previous victors from her district, will she be able to survive the torturous games? But what about Peeta; what will happen to him and Katniss? Who will survive?
I really enjoyed this book; I loved how Katniss and Peeta developed a relationship together and how it showed you what it was like for them. This book is full of emotions and tension. One of the most heart-breaking moments was when little Rue died. The description and feelings used in the book really made you re-late with the characters and how they live. I am definitely looking forward to reading the other books in the series!
9 out of 10 stars, this book was very good, well done Suzanne Collins!
