Bombs dropped like thunderbolts hurled from Zeus himself. Rifle-fire punched through the acrid smoke. Edward fell on the first guard plunging the bayonet deep, the next was his former commanding officer. His heart full of hatred Edward struck out hard with the butt of his rifle and rendered him unconscious.
Making his way back to the Germans, he paused handling his cold rifle as Englishmen poured into the trench. Time to run. He sprinted away like a raging bull, but then it hit him. A German sniper had shot him down where he stood. He never finished his task.
