The Man's Daughter

I walked along a street where ghosts danced in the orange glow of streetlights and store fronts were forever boarded up. My footsteps were a hollow echo in the night. I passed an alleyway when I heard voices. I turned and saw a shivering girl with skin the colour of moonlight and matted black hair. She uncurled one of her fingers towards me. I didn't move. I blinked and the girl was gone. I thought it was her. My daughter, the one gripped by death, but it was only shadows. I turned away. Behind me a silhouette emerged from the darkness.
