Fangtastic news! Here’s a brilliant way to inspire ALL pupils at your school to get creative with Young Writers’ latest competition, Bonkers Monsters!

It’s guaranteed to get pupils’ imaginations running wild and eager to get writing... even reluctant writers. It’s easy to take part and your pupils could see themselves as published writers.

There are 2 styles of worksheets, one designed for 7-11 year-olds and one for 5-7 year-olds, which make it easy for pupils to plan and write their mini sagas (a story told in 100 words). There are also lots of online resources tailored to each age range to help support your pupils to write.

Mix and match the worksheets and resources as you wish to - use what is best for your pupils!

When your pupils create their own monster, it instantly engages them and encourages them to use their imagination, let the roarsome fun begin!

Every participating school receives 2 complimentary copies of the book their pupils feature in along with a 28-day free trial to SPaG Monsters online literacy game, plus a bookmark and sticker for every entrant and prizes up for grabs... see the prize section for further info.

Only one entry per pupil, there is no limit to the number of entries per school. Teachers please submit your entries altogether where possible!

Your pupils' entries must be their own work.

Mini sagas can be submitted on the entry form or an A4 sheet of paper or typed (on a computer or using the Online Writing Portal), adults can also scribe if needed.

Each pupil's name, age and school name should be included on their entry.

100-word limit for mini sagas (excluding the title).

Story starters are optional, but must be included in the word count if used.

Bonkers Monsters has been inspired by sport this week (they loved the Super Bowl and Winter Games!); here are some great ideas we couldn’t ‘weight’ to tell you about...

• Winter Games Paralympics: watch some of the events and get your pupils inspired by the amazing athletes – what sporty skills and equipment could their monster have? What would the result be if their monster competed in the Bonkers Monster Games?
• Six Nations: split your class into 6 countries of your choice, each group works together to create a monster inspired by the country
• Women’s Cricket World Cup is this month, what would your pupils call their team? Would they use a cricket bat and ball, or something else... perhaps they could event their own bonkers sport for their monster to play!
• FIFA World Cup is later this year, it’s a great theme to inspire your class, who could use their football hero as inspiration for their monster... perhaps a Messi monster who is untidy or Hairy Kane (a fuzzy fella) or how about Bruno who’s a record-breaker?
• Good old Wimbledon – what would a bonkers monsters tennis match be like? Lots of strawberries and scream, and we’re 100% sure the crowds would roar! What if the ball was a tiny monster or they played with several tennis balls at once. Bonkers!

There are 3 questions on box 2 of the 5-7 year-old planning sheet – with the use of dice your pupils can roll a number and use the suggestion to help them. They can of course re-roll if they want to, or use their own ideas.

What is your bonkers monster’s name?
1. Use a colour in the name
2. Be inspired by the size of the monster: tiny, huge, giant, little
3. Include the name of your favourite food: Banana Beast or Pizza Grub
4. Name it after your favourite person
5. Use a sound in the name: whoosh, rattle, splash, roar, screech
6. Look out the window and use something you see in the name: grass, tree, dog, sky
