Keeping a diary is a fantastic way to get younger pupils into a regular writing habit, which helps them become fluent and confident writers.

My Amazing Diary offers your pupils the opportunity to kick-start a diary writing habit! You could ask your pupils to keep a diary for the rest of this term, writing a recount of this experience at the end of term to enter. Alternatively, they could try their hand at writing about a day in the life of someone else, or even writing about an imaginary event.

Only one entry per pupil, there is no limit to the number of entries per school.

200-word limit.

Ask your pupils to write/type their entry, ensuring their name, age and school name are included.

Where possible, the school to send / upload / email all their pupils' entries to us.

Entries can be on the entry form or an A4 sheet of paper or typed.

Entries must be your pupils' own work.

It's World Book Day on the 4th March, so there's no better time to inspire your younger pupils with writing a diary about their favourite book character!

It’s a fun way to introduce diary writing to younger pupils, they’ll have a blast!

Today is International Women's Day and it's Mother's Day on 14th March, why not inspire your pupils' to write diary entries that celebrate their mums or an important role model in their lives?

From siblings, grandparents, cousins and parents, to teachers, friends, or their idol, it's a great way to write a positive diary entry that's heartfelt and personal. 

On the 20th March, it’s World Storytelling Day, even though it's a Saturday use the event to let your pupils' imaginations run riot, what exciting adventures could they go on? They could recount their “best ever day” or write a diary about their favourite thing to do. There's so much fun to be had!

Inspire pupils to write their diary entries about their favourite traditional tale!

They could choose to be the big bad wolf or the gingerbread man. Perhaps they’d like to be knight or princess in their diaries! You could even inspire them with traditional tales from other cultures.

Why not get your pupils writing a diary from the perspective of a father figure? It could be their own father, a famous father from a book, or a parental figure they look up to.

What does the character they’ve chosen like? What do they do? Where would they go?

By letting your pupils choose their father figure it makes it easier for them to write from another perspective as they may know the person or character well.

Wednesday the 23rd is National Writing Day and this year’s theme is 'connections'.

Give your pupils a real challenge by asking them to write a diary entry based on connections, here are some ideas to get started

• Who do you feel most connected to?
• Which book do you connect with, could you be a character in the story?
• Do you feel connected to a place? Maybe somewhere you’ve been on holiday

The Euros are well underway and to get with the spirit of things we have a sports-themed tip for My Amazing Diary!

Ask your pupils to write a diary about a favourite sportsperson. Your pupils can choose a sportsperson from any sport and write about them, or from their perspective. Your pupils could write about:

A big match their sportsperson played
A big tournament or competition the sports person was in
Their own sports or P.E. lessons
Their sporting hopes and dreams

With summer fast approaching, what are your pupils most looking forward to?

Ask your pupils to write as their future selves and write a diary about their summer activities. Use these points to help get the creativity flowing…

Who will you see or visit?   ->   Who did you meet?

What do pets get up to when you’re not around? What goes through a lion’s mind? Why are sloths so slow? Get your pupils to answer these questions in their next diary entry, an amazing animal adventure!

Get your pupils to step into the life of their favourite animal and write from their perspective. To get your pupils extra imaginative, why not make up a wacky animal? From a giant giraffe, a businessman crocodile or a fish who can fly, get your pupils to stretch their imaginations, then write about it!
