Planning a story and keeping the plot on track so the story has a beginning, middle and end is so important – spending lots of time writing an amazing story with lots of detail and adventure is all very well and good, but if it doesn’t make sense it’s disappointing for both writer and readers.

Ask pupils to consider 5 key points in their story: who, what, why, when and where. This makes them think about what will happen further into the story rather than getting absorbed into their idea and forgetting about the planning!

With our story worksheets, pupils can consider the 5 key points in each picture to help them move their story plot along too.

Ideas with a Festive Twist

Firstly download and print (or request to be posted to you) the My First Story – Adventure Land Create Your Own story template...

Then get your pupils inspired by these festive ideas:

• Be inspired by their character in the school Christmas play
• What’s it like to be Santa on Christmas Eve?
• Imagine being an elf in Santa’s workshop
• Go on an adventure to the snowman’s ball
• Go on a school trip to the North Pole
• Meet Santa in the school playground!

There is also a Christmas Story template that you can download, which has pictures to help tell a Christmas story!

Provide pupils with a list of adjectives. These can be template-specific or you can provide a generic list to be used.

Ask pupils to think about all of their senses when writing. It’s easy to tell us what something looks like and to add in a couple of adjectives to enhance description. However, to make the story more interesting, more description is needed. E.g. What does the dinosaur smell like or sound like? So there’s a huge, terrifying dragon – but why is there and how is the main character feeling?

We’ve also provided a handy word bank on each of the themed story templates to help pupils with their vocabulary and spelling!

Imagination and description are a fantastic combination that will result in some brilliant stories!

School Stories

We understand that some children might find writing a story daunting, unsure how to get their ideas on to paper even with visual prompts.

We’ve found that asking children to write something they’ve enjoyed at school is a great way to spark their imaginations. From the school play and visitors, to a trip or non-uniform day, there’s lots to choose from!

Once they have an event or activity, children can then be encouraged to embellish their story, adding fictional characters, occurrences and settings. The school trip could be to the moon on a rocket, or perhaps they won sports day because they had super powers that morning!
