My First Riddle encourages reception class pupils to use their senses and imagination to create their own original riddle. Your class can write riddles on any theme, from the current class topic to people, places or animals.

It's a fun activity to do in the classroom or that parents can do with their children at home either by using the downloadable worksheet or by writing / typing their work.

There are different themed templates available to download to inspire even the most reluctant writers! Let's help your pupils become life-long readers by fostering a love of creative writing at a young age.

[Rules] =>

Ask your pupils (or adult) to write/type their poem, ensuring their name, age and school name are included.

Only one entry per pupil, there is no limit to the number of entries per school.

Where possible, the school to send / upload / email all their pupils' entries to us.

Poems can be on the worksheet or an A4 sheet of paper or typed.

Poems must be your pupils' own work.

Songs and rhymes are a fantastic way to introduce poetry to little learners as it helps them with vocabulary and they learn rhythm too.

Why not make up songs to tunes your pupils already know? This allows your pupils be imaginative, express themselves, supports ECAT and they can get musical too by beating out a rhythm. It's a fun way to introduce poetry, we're sure you'll enjoy this activity too!

Act our rhymes with your pupils! Why? Because words linked with movement helps children remember. Not only is this a fun activity it boosts vocabulary and supports ECAT.

'If You're Happy And You Know It', 'I Am The Music Man', 'Alice The Camel (Makaton)' and '1, 2, 3, 4, 5' are just a few great examples that you could try!

Tongue Twisters... the perfect introduction to alliteration & rhythm!

Firstly, have fun with these well-known tongue twisters...

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!
She sells seashells by the seashore
Four fine fresh fish for you
Red lorry, yellow lorry, red lorry, yellow lorry, red lorry, yellow lorry

Next, have fun creating a tongue twister as a class - pick a letter, then ask your pupils to say word beginning with that letter - F, S, T, etc are easier! Together, choose words to build the tongue twister and have fun saying it!

Your pupils can get familiar with these poetic techniques and can even try using them in their riddle poems...

We all understand the importance of reading at home and to help parents support their children learning over half term, why not send them home with this recommended reads list of lots of lovely poetry books they could borrow from their local library? Invite your pupils to bring in a new poem they discovered in half term and make a display of their favourites to help keep their interest in poetry alive throughout the school year.
