What is Wonderverse? It is anything your pupils want it to be!

Your pupils will be inspired to delve into their imaginations to write a poem about any topic. Using any style or technique, they can write about incredible worlds or fantasy creatures, express their inner thoughts or emotions, describe their favourite people, places or hobbies, or write about your class topic.

There's a wealth of free resources available to download, including example poems from past winners, a lesson plan and accompanying PowerPoint, poem planning sheets and how-to writing guides for poetry styles and techniques.

Wonderverse is ideal for 7-12 year-olds, but pupils outside the age range are welcome to enter, so it's a great opportunity to get your whole school writing!

Save your print costs and request as many entry forms as you need and we'll post them out to you free of charge.

Competition Rules

To make sure your entries are valid, please follow the rules listed below:

Extended Closing Date: Friday 8th Nov 2024
  • Only one entry per pupil, there is no limit to the number of entries per school. Teachers please submit your entries altogether where possible!
  • Ask your pupils to write their piece (or an adult can scribe/type it), ensuring their name, age and school name are included.
  • Work can be on the entry form or an A4 sheet of paper or typed (on a computer or in the Online Writing Portal).
  • Poems can be written in any poetic style & use any poetic techniques.
  • Copyright remains with the author.
  • UK entrants only.
  • Free to enter.
  • Pupils' work must be their own! (Please note on the entry if there is anything we need to take into consideration when reading the work.)

    For Schools

    The school that submits the best overall set of entries will win £1,000 and Young Writers' Award of Excellence. 

    One runner-up school will win a huge poetry book bundle.

    PLUS every participating school receives a free copy of the book their pupils feature in!

    (Remember, you receive 1 free copy for every 30 entries you submit! E.g. 1-30 entries you receive 1 copy, 31-60 entries you receive 2 copies, etc.)

    The runner-up prize is a magnificent poetry book bundle which includes a copy of each book in the photo. A huge thank you to Bloomsbury Publishing PLCHachette Children's GroupPan MacmillanWalker Books LtdTrokia and Quarto for donating all the wonderful poetry books this term's competitions that are an incredible asset to any school classroom or library!

    For Pupils

    Our 10 favourite published writers will each win a fantastic creative writing goody bag!

    Every entrant receives a bookmark & sticker, and we award a certificate of merit to all young writers chosen for publication.

    (School and pupil winners will be selected from entries received in the Autumn Term 2024 and will be chosen the following term. The goody bag image is an example, contents may differ.)
