This Is Me Acrostics gives young writers a simple, fun way to turn the things they already know about themselves into a poem of their own.
An acrostic is a poem where the first letter of each line spells out a word, such as your child's name.
They already know the subject - it's them!

They don't need a complicated idea. Something simple and familiar can be the perfect starting point for their acrostic.

You don't need to teach a poetry lesson. A little conversation and encouragement can help them turn their ideas into an acrostic of their own.

How much can I help?
Talking through ideas is absolutely fine. You can ask them questions, help them think of words, and encourage them if they get stuck.
If they need support with the physical act of writing, you can scribe of type their poem for them. The important thing is that the ideas and poem are their own.
It doesn't need to be perfect. Completing a poem of their own is something to be proud of.
Imagine them seeing their poem in a real book!
For a young writer, finishing a poem is already something to be proud of. Seeing their own words valued and potentially published can make that feel even more special.
If their poem is selected, they will see their writing published in a real Young Writers book and receive a Certificate of Merit.
Every child who enters also receives a bookmark and sticker for taking part.
It's a chance to celebrate what they've created and help build confidence in what they might write next.

To make sure your entries are valid, please follow the rules listed below:
THEIR POEM
- Your child's poem must be their own original work.
- Your child's poem must be an acrostic.
- Only one entry per person.
PREPARING THEIR ENTRY
- Your child's poem can be written on the entry form, a sheet of paper or typed.
- Please include your child's name, age and home address on their entry.
WHO CAN ENTER
- Ideal for 5-7 year-olds, but entrants outside that age range can enter.
- UK entrants only.
GOOD TO KNOW
- No purchase necessary to win.
- Copyright remains with the author.
