[Tips] =>

Help your pupils think about the 5 key points in their story: who, what, why, when and where. This helps them consider what will happen further into the story rather than getting absorbed into their idea and forgetting about the planning!

Take your class mascot on amazing adventures! (If you don’t have a class mascot, don’t worry, you can create one – you just need a soft toy or puppet to help your pupils be excited to write.)

Download the Pupil Planning Worksheet – this will help you complete this activity easily.

Have your mascot at the front of the class – introduce it to your pupils! Now ask them to draw a quick sketch of it in box 1 on their planning sheet.

Now, they can keep the mascot’s name as it is, or they can re-name it – write this down in box 2.

Next skip to box 4 – each pupil picks a place to take the mascot, encourage them to pick different options for variety!

It’s time to plan the story... so where does the story start? Perhaps your pupils take the mascot home from school? It could fall into their bag or appear on their doorstep! The story could even start on the way to their chosen place, or they could already be there.

What exciting event happens in the middle of their story? The mascot could go missing or find some treasure, or even come to life!

Now how does the story end? The easiest way for younger pupils to end their story is to arrive home or return the mascot to school.

Pick a traditional tale, such as Little Red Riding Hood or Cinderella.

Then choose a couple of different characters and talk with your pupils about the characters and how they might have viewed the story. E.g.:
• An ugly sister (Cinderella)
• The fairy godmother (Cinderella)
• A mouse (Cinderella)
• The wolf (Little Red Riding Hood)
• Grandma (Little Red Riding Hood)
• The woodcutter (Little Red Riding Hood)

Can they tell the story from another character’s point of view or change the story? What if the fairy godmother’s spell went wrong? What was the wolf doing before it found Little Red Riding Hood? What if Little Red Riding Hood’s grandma was a black belt in karate? What if the mouse in Cinderella didn’t get changed back at midnight.

This is a great way to get younger pupils writing imaginatively, but by basing their work on stories they are familiar with, it will help them with the structure and plot. It’s also so much fun to do!

Ask your pupils to tell you their favourite place OR person.

Jot these down on the board in two columns.

E.g.

Favourite Person	Favourite Place
My dog (animals are allowed!)	The sweet shop
Grandad	The seaside
A vet	My auntie’s house
Superhero	The park

Get all of your pupils contributing!

Now make pairs – match a person with a place. Pick one pair and ask your pupils to suggest ideas of what the person would do in that place, real or imaginary.

For example if Grandad went to the park he might have a lovely time playing on the climbing frame and swing so high his feet touched the sky!

Or what if a superhero went for a trip to the seaside? Get your pupils using their senses to help get imaginations fired up. What can they see, hear, feel, touch and smell? Ask them to write down some notes. Share their ideas and then encourage them to start planning and writing their adventures of story!

Here are some ideas...

• Your pupils could pretend they are Santa and write a day in the life of style story
• What is it like to be an elf on Christmas Eve?
• How would a key worker spend Christmas Day?
• Your pupils could attend a snowman’s ball!
• How would your pupils spend a snowy day?
