The Poetry Bus is here to engage and motivate your little learners aged 5-7 to write their very own poems. Be inspired by your current class topic, a book, the seasons, friendship... there’s lots of choice to ensure getting your pupils writing poetry is easy and fun.
It’s National Poetry Day on 7th October 2021 and the theme is “Choices”... Often younger pupils get overlooked at this event, but The Poetry Bus complements this fantastic annual event as your pupils can choose to write a poem in any style or theme, giving them the opportunity to be involved and help foster a life-long love of poetry.

Get your pupils to think about their favourite day out, or even their journey to school.
How do they get there? Who do they meet and what do they see along the way?
Then ask them to draw a map of the route, drawing and describing all these things.
All aboard The Poetry Bus! The Poetry Bus’ destinations are limitless, just like your pupils’ imaginations – if it could take them anywhere, where would they want to go?
Disney World, the future, space?
Create a word bank of nouns, adjectives and emotions that describe their chosen place, then see if they can construct sentences using them.
E.g. I felt scared when I saw the slimy alien.
Encourage your pupils to be imaginative as possible!
Subject Selection Activity
Divide an A4 piece of plain paper into 4 parts. Label each section with the headings Favourite People / Favourite Animals / Things I Love To Do / My Best Day Ever and photocopy one for each pupil.
Ask your pupils to write at least 3 or 4 things in each box. Let them pick one thing they jotted down from each topic box and then get them to describe what they love about this person/animal/day/hobby.
How do they/it make them feel? Where do they live/where is it? Ask these questions and get your pupils to write their poems based on the descriptions they’ve previously given, and voila… They’ve created a poem!
Riddle poems are a great way to use imagination and senses.
A riddle poem should...
• Try to have at least 6 clues
• Use present tense
• Use lots of description
• Try to trick the reader
• Have a clever title
• Finish with the question, who or what am I?
Talk to your class about spooky things they could write a poem about such as a witch, a car, a pumpkin or a ghost!
Pick one to write a class riddle poem about... we think a cat is a good place to start!
Write: The answer is “cat” at the bottom of the board / piece of paper
Talk about how you can describe a cat without saying its name... how about “The Milk Drinker” or “A Witch’s Friend”? Choose one for a clever title!
Now talk about what a witch’s cat might do and make notes, then write a class riddle! Now your class should be ready to write their own spooky riddle!
To some, winter is the most wonderful time of the year – Christmas, Diwali, Bonfire Night, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, hot chocolate & snow days… As a class, get the children to come up with as many words (nouns/adjectives/feelings etc.) associated with winter as you can.
Aim for one per child. Write the words down on small pieces of paper, fold them up and then put them all in a box. Each child in turn picks one out and then writes a sentence that must include their winter word.
As an extra idea, why not get children into groups to write poems using all their words? Spread the love!
