It's a brilliant way for your pupils to get their teeth (and claws!) into poetry writing. Creating a monster to write a poem about is a fun challenge that will certainly create a buzz around poetry in your school!

[Rules] =>

Only one entry per student; there is no limit to the number of entries per school.

Independent entrants are welcome, please provide your full postal address rather than the school's details.

Poems can be on the entry form or A4 sheet of paper.

Poems must be your pupils' own work.

Ensure that all pupils include their name and age on their entries.

Dirty Beasts poetry book is the perfect accompaniment to this activity! Read some poems, get pupils engaged then let them create their own monster and write a poem inspired by it! Their Poetry Monster could be based on an animal or they can use their imaginations to conjure up a weird and wonderful creature!

Monster Poetry is the perfect way for pupils to put into practice using adjectives and to show off their creative skills as they describe their monsters with wonderful words!

For example...

Instead of BIG use huge, large, gigantic, massive, enormous

OR

Use an adjective to describe how their monster feels...fluffy, rough, spiky, smooth, slimy, bumpy, soft etc.

Showcase both their technical writing skills and their creativity - two birds with one stone...what's not to love! Poems can be in any style from amazing acrostics or fantastic free verse to super sense poems and everything in-between!

The theme for National Poetry Day this year is 'truth' - you don't have to use this theme to get pupils writing, Poetry Monsters can help you do that, but if you did here are some ideas:

• Create a superhero monster encompassing all things good & honest.
• Be inspired by 'On the Way Home' by Jill Murphy – although a young readers book, the idea of the story is to explain a situation using exaggeration. Pupils could create a monster poem based on something simple their monster has done, such as eat their friend's cake and then write creative excuses.
• Use a title to inspire the theme in the poem such as '10 things my monster has in its pocket'.
• Flip the theme on its head and write about lies!

Ask pupils to write their poem in the style of an invitation...

Writing a poem in the style of an invitation needs description - pupils are setting a scene. Who would pupils invite to meet their monster? What food / drink would they offer? Would there be any entertainment? Where is their poem set - is the monster in the shed or under the bed or even at school!

This is great way to weave Halloween into poetry writing too - pupils' monsters could be inviting the reader to a monster ball, party or trick or treating! Get the poems written now, ready for a roar-some display for Halloween!
