An acrostic is a poetic form that challenges pupils to be creative, expressive and immerses them in fun!

Use the bright, engaging entry form and planning sheet alongside the online lesson plan to captivate and motivate your pupils to plan and write their very own All About Me acrostic.

From family, friends, hobbies and pets to food, places, books, idols and their culture,
there is so much to inspire your little poetry stars.

Only one entry per pupil, there is no limit to the number of entries per school.

Independent entrants are welcome, please provide your full postal address rather than the school's details.

Poems can be on the entry form or an A4 sheet of paper.

Poems must be your pupils' own work.

Ensure that all pupils include their name and age on their entries.

[Tips] =>

Working in pairs on writing acrostics is a great way for pupils to support each other, share ideas and learn more about their classmates in a fun and informal way.

Each pupil needs a partner and a theme for their acrostic. Their name, favourite food, pet or what they dislike most are all good themes to suggest.

Ask pupils to talk to their partner to find out more about them before they write their acrostic. The discussion will help them with ideas for words for each other's work.

Once written, the All About Me acrostics also make a wonderful classroom display! Why not join in and write one using your name to let your pupils find out more about you...?

Be inspired by books! It's a great way to incorporate the All About Me theme and with literacy, a key focus in Years 1 and 2, asking children to write an acrostic on their favourite book or literary character is a fantastic way to inspire them, as well as let them show you their knowledge and understanding of the book.

Asking pupils to write an acrostic using their name is a great way to find out what a child thinks about themself and by adding a bit more info to the acrostic, the child can reveal why they have chosen those words to describe themselves - adding a story to their poem to make it more interesting and engaging, for example...

T     hinker (I am always asking 'Why?')          

H     appy (I like to smile and laugh all the time)

O     range (it's my favourite colour as Blackpool FC wear it)

M     usic (my dad lets me play his drums)

A      mazing (that's what I am!) 

S      triker (is what I want to be when I grow up)

Once pupils have their All About Me acrostic word, ask them to think of words to do with their subject. We've chosen our favourite animal to use as an example. Now, can your pupils think of words that start with same letters as their acrostic and relate to their subject?

E.g.

L     ovely lion lying lazily

I     ncredible and inspiring

O    utside the old orange lion sleeps

N    ow noises wake the lion up.

As the example above shows, pupils need only get 1 or 2 'pockets' of alliteration through their poem, every single word doesn't need to start with the same letter. Writing using a poetic style and incorporating a poetic technique at 5-7 years-old is an excellent achievement!
