Monster Acrostics is fun, engaging and guaranteed to get your pupils writing their very own poems.

They will love creating a monster character, and the acrostic poem gives them a ready-made structure for their ideas. Encourage the use of adjectives and expanded noun phrases to showcase their vocabulary knowledge.

The free resources are all designed to make your life easier, with a lesson plan and PowerPoint, examples and more to guide your class through the writing process. All pupils have the opportunity to see their poems published in a real book, which will give them a boost like nothing else, and there are fab prizes to be won too!

[Rules] =>

Only one entry per pupil, there is no limit to the number of entries per school. Please submit your entries together where possible!

Ask your pupils to ensure their name, age and school name are included. (Initials or first names only can be supplied if necessary.)

An adult can scribe if necessary.

Poems can be on the entry form or an A4 sheet of paper or typed (on a computer or in the Online Writing Portal).

Pupils' poems must be their own work! (Please note on the entry if there is anything we need to take into consideration when reading the work.)

Poems need to be in the acrostic style.

What happens now?

Our editorial team will read every single entry. Any child whose work they'd love to publish in a book will be sent a letter and certificate. Children whose work hasn't met the competition criteria will have the chance to resubmit their work. Winners will be chosen from published pieces once all the books in the series have been published.
