An acrostic is a poetic form that challenges pupils to be creative, expressive and immerses them in fun! Use the bright, engaging entry form and planning sheet alongside the lesson plan (available online) to captivate and motivate your pupils to plan and write their very own Animal Adventure acrostic.
From family pets, wild animals and magical creatures to endangered species, dinosaurs and
imaginary monsters, there is so much to inspire your little poetry stars.

Pupil winners will be chosen from entries received in the Spring Term 2020.
[Tips] =>Take your class to the library and ask them all to find a book with an animal on the cover. This might break the library rule of ‘being quiet’ but it will definitely create interest in the activity!
Back in class get pupils to match with other pupils who have the same animal – how many different animals have they found? Which is their favourite and why? Are there any animals missing they’d have like to have found (such as a dinosaur or unicorn!)
Now pupils are excited about writing an animal poem, move on to the lesson plan or hand out the worksheets!
To build a basic acrostic from one word per letter to a full sentence, use similes!
They're simple for younger pupils to understand and use. What is their animal like? What does it remind them of and why? From being as yellow as the sun to being as funny as a clown, similes will help build the acrostics up!
Why not try it as a class activity – how many similes can your class create?
Adding awesome adjectives is going to make your pupils' acrostics pop off the page!
Getting your pupils to visualise what their animal is like when writing their poem will help them expand their sentences.
It’s a quick & fun class activity – pick an animal and ask pupils to shout out descriptions!
E.g. The dog's claws - could be described as sharp or the cat's fur could be soft, fluffy or smooth. Let your pupils have fun with it!
As it's almost Valentine's Day why not let your pupils write an acrostic about their favourite animal!
Why do they love this animal so much? Can they include this in their poem too?
You could do anti-Valentine’s poems to by asking pupils to write an acrostic inspired by a “scary creature” instead!
