Use Imagine! resources to inspire your students today to do just this! They can use the optional poetry prompts to help them create their idea to write about, or they can create their own thought-provoking poetry.

To make sure your entries are valid, please follow the rules listed below:

  • Only one entry per student, there is no limit to the number of entries per school. Teachers please submit your entries altogether where possible!

  • Independent entries are welcome - please provide your home address details instead of the school's / use the independent entry form..

  • Students' poems must be their own work.

  • Where possible, the school to send / upload / email all their students' entries to us.

  • Ask your students to write/type their poem, ensuring their name, age and school name are included.

  • Poems can be on the entry form or an A4 sheet of paper or typed.

  • Poems can be written in any poetic style & use any poetic techniques.

Tip #1

Download the ideas poster

Pick 5 words for your class:
1. Democracy
2. Health
3. Image
4. Love
5. Loathe

Show your students the ideas poster and then give them the 5 words. Can they create an ‘Imagine if...’ thought to write about for all 5 words (or as many as they can). Then ask students to share their ideas and discuss them as a class.

E.g. Image
- Imagine if we could only see thoughts not faces
- Imagine if we all looked identical
- Imagine if we could change our image with technology

Give your students the option of writing down any additional ideas after the discussion – all your students should have an idea to write about.

Tip #2

Get your students feeling by using 2020 news headlines to help talk about emotions and how they can use their feelings in their poetry writing.

Read each headline and ask students to tell you what it makes them feel:

1. New South Wales declares state of emergency over bushfires
2. COVID-19 outbreak officially labelled as a pandemic
3. George Floyd dies in police custody
4. NASA-SpaceX’s ‘Launch America’ takes off
5. Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of the United States

Now ask them to create an ‘imagine’ idea for each headline, e.g.

1. South Wales declares state of emergency over bushfires
Imagine if the world was about to end...

2. COVID-19 outbreak officially labelled as a pandemic
Imagine if you could change history...

3. George Floyd dies in police custody
Imagine if everyone was equal...

4. NASA-SpaceX’s ‘Launch America’ takes off
Imagine if we all lived in space...

5. Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of the United States
Imagine if kids ruled the world...

This activity will help your students write heartfelt, thought-provoking poems about real-life events.

Tip #3

An acrostic is a fun poetry style that can be adapted for different ages:

An acrostic is where the first letter of the word is written vertically and the initial letter forms a word.

If Aliens Exist

I f aliens exist, I expect to see them
F lying down to Earth in spaceships

A lighting from their craft
L ike nothing we’ve ever imagined
I n countless Hollywood movies
E xtra-terrestrial life will take us by surprise
N othing will ever be the same again
S uppose they attack us?

E xtraordinary powers never seen before
X -ray vision seeing to the heart of us
I wonder what they’ll think of us… Perhaps they’ll
S ee what we’ve done to our world, and
T urn around, never to come back.

• Students could use the word “Imagine” as their acrostic word
• Students could use a phrase to write an acrostic on
• Students could let the lines run over, so sentences fall on to the next line down etc

Tip #4

Ask your students to Google / research a type of poem. E.g.
• Sonnet
• Pantoum
• Tyburn
• Haiku
• Renga
• Ode

How many different types can the class generate? It’s worth offering a house point/commendation for any students who have a unique answer.
Narrow down the list to 2 choices. Split your class in half – one writes in one poetic style, one in the other. Invite students to share their work, and for the class to give positive feedback. Which style was most popular? Were there any other styles your students would like to try?

Get a discussion going around poetry and encourage students to explore different styles before choosing one to write their Imagine-inspired poem in.

Tip #5

Ask your students what Christmas means to them & have a discussion about their thoughts before working as a class to create some Imagine poetry prompts.

• Imagine if Christmas was cancelled
• Imagine if Christmas created unity and world peace
• Imagine if no one was homeless, hungry or alone on Christmas Day
• Imagine if you were Santa!

Some of us love Christmas, some of us don’t celebrate it and some of us don’t enjoy it at all – this is a great way to explore your students’ thoughts and let them express their feelings about Christmas in a safe space.

Tip #6

Be inspired by Perseverance - NASA’s Mars landing rover!

  • Imagine if you were the first person on Mars...
  • Imagine if you just arrived on Earth for the first time...
  • Imagine if you discovered a new planet...
  • Imagine if you were on a tourist trip to space...
  • Imagine if you could sit on a star...
  • Imagine if you lived on a moon base...
  • Imagine if the truth is out there...
  • Imagine if you were an intergalactic space explorer...

Tip #7

This is a simple tip but one that is so useful...

Use a thesaurus or a rhyming dictionary!

Lots of professional writers and poets use these tools to help them find the right word(s) for their work. It's a great way to explore language and improve vocabulary!

Tip #8

Repetition is a great poetic technique to try!

Once your students know the poetry prompt they want to use - or have an idea for their poem, ask them to spend a few minutes creating the opening line of the poem, one they really like! They can create their own, or use the poetry prompt as part of it.

Suggest they use this line as the one they repeat in their poem. They could use it to open each verse, or as the first and last line, or even repeat the line as part of a rhyming couplet. It's a powerful way to express the meaning of their poem - and if you have students hesitant to write a poem, repetition reduces the amount they have to write!

Tip #9

Be inspired by music!

Kandinsky (a Russian painter) used to paint to music - so why not try writing poetry to it to add a bit of fun to your lesson!

You could pick an energetic piece of opera, a movie score, or even a famous song in the karaoke version! Choose a piece with no words so it's the music that influences the writing, not the words.
