The Adventure Zone

7-11 Years

The Adventure Zone Video

Pupils go through the imaginary portal, which can take them... anywhere!

The Adventure Zone is jam-packed full of ideas and inspiration that guarantees to engage your pupils, as well as challenge them to write a mini saga - a story told in just 100 words.

They choose their theme, setting and character before writing an amazing mini saga. Where will your pupils' imaginations take them in The Adventure Zone?

Writing Tips

Tip #1

Utilise the Fun & Free Resources!!

1. Call, email or request online additional worksheets – they are free and we’ll send as many as you need!
2. Bookmark the video, so it’s ready for your lesson
3. Download the optional lesson plan and presentation
4. Pop the closing date in your diary and paperclip the freepost sticker on that page
5. Follow us on Twitter @YoungWritersCW for tips, ideas as well as to see how other schools are getting involved

Tip #2

Split pupils into 6 groups and give each group an ideas postcard, a sheet of paper and a pen. As a group the need to write down a name, an adjective, a colour, a verb and any random word they like!

Challenge each pupil to write their own mini saga on their postcard story theme and include each of the words on the sheet (or as many as possible!)

Your pupils can then share their mini sagas within their group to see how different they are. If you have time, share all the stories with the class, so they can see how different children were inspired to use 5 simple words!

Tip #3

Adventure Zone Ideas with a Festive Twist:

  • Be inspired by a character from the school’s Christmas play
  • Be Santa on Christmas Eve
  • Be a naughty elf
  • Attend the snowman’s ball
  • Take a trip to the North Pole
  • Write about the best Christmas ever!
  • When Rudolph was found in the playground...

Christmas fun is always the best kind, so we hope you enjoy the festive creative writing ideas!

Tip #4

  • Something the main character cares about is at stake – how will they react?
