Tom Mitchell Story Starter:

There’s nothing as joyous as the sound of the final bell on the Friday afternoon before the summer holidays. And Jamie would have been grinning from ear to ear if she hadn’t realised, as she passed through the school gates, that she’d left her phone in T26, her French classroom, the room not only at the very top, but also the very corner, of the languages block.

Having pushed through the tide of excited students, and climbed the three flights of steep steps, she knocked on the classroom door. No reply. She gingerly opened the door. Miss Stones wasn’t there, that was something at least. She was too tired for a telling off.

Skipping between the tables, the afternoon light flooded the room from huge windows. Through them was a flat roof that, rumour had it, a group of sixth-formers once crept out onto. She wasn’t worried about this, though, as she’d spotted her phone at her place on the corner table at the back. She grabbed at it and checked the screen for missed calls. There was nothing, but she’d forgotten – there was never any signal up here.

With a mind full of plans for the weekend, most of them involving Netflix and, potentially, pizza, she crossed back to the door, which had swung closed on her entry. She pulled at its handle. It was locked. She tried again. It remained locked. She turned and looked across the room, her heart breakdancing pretty much. How was it locked? It hadn’t been thirty seconds earlier. Had the caretaker locked it without checking the room? Had a kid somehow found a key? Was this a prank?

Oh my days, she felt sick.

She heard dull thumps from the classroom next door. Was someone there? Didn’t Miss Stones keep an airhorn in her cupboard for fire practice? What else was in the cupboard? Could she open the windows? Was that a way out? And what about the huge air-conditioning vent in the ceiling? Could she crawl through that? That’s what would happen in the movies.

Whatever decision she took, she needed to take it now. Mum was waiting in the carpark and, even if Jamie managed to escape this room, she’d definitely be grounded for, like, eternity if she was massively late to the car

How will you end this gripping story? We can’t wait to find out!
