Confidence, Creativity & Cake: Isla’s Publishing Story

We caught up with young writer Isla and her proud parents to hear all about her poem being published in Wonderverse – A Mind Full of Magic, and the special ways they celebrated this magical moment.

Q&A with Isla:

How did you feel when you found out your writing was going to be published?

I felt very happy and excited. Also a little bit nervous a bunch of people would buy the book and read my poem.

Has being published changed your confidence in your writing?

Yes it has made me more confident. Now it has been published I know my work is good enough to do it again.

Did being published encourage you to write more?

I would like to write more now in my free time.

What was the reaction from your family, friends, or teachers when they found out?

Well my mum went crazy. My dad was really happy for me. My brother Ryan was happy too. My teacher was very pleased for me.

I had a publishing party and book signing with my family. I loved it! I ate my favourite food and it was a funny time. It was joyful.

How has being published influenced your future goals or aspirations?

I feel more confident now to do other things. I really want to be a Lioness. I love football and I will work hard for it.

Q&A with Isla's parents Sarah and Grahame:

How did Isla react when she found out her writing was going to be published?

We had no idea Isla had been chosen. We thought the letter was just to say thank you for trying. So I (mum) got very excited reading it out loud so Isla was very excited and surprised.

How did you celebrate?

So I always believe you should celebrate the good times. We held a publishing party at our local restaurant. We had balloons and a cake. A little bouquet of flowers for Isla. All matching the colours from the book. Isla signed her books for the family. It was a wonderful evening.

Have you noticed any changes in her confidence or attitude towards writing since being published?

Isla has said she would like to write more. In the past Isla has wrote songs so maybe she might start again. She’s so happy with herself and proud which is fantastic to see.

Did this achievement encourage her to write more at home or in school?

I think this will absolutely encourage her to be more confident with her school work now.

How did family members or friends respond to the news of their publication?

Our family and friends were very happy and proud. They have asked Isla to read it to them. Her grandad even wrote a poem back to her. It really has involved the whole family. They all celebrated with us.

In what ways do you think this experience has influenced Isla’s future interests or ambitions?

I can see Isla just has had a huge confidence boost. This has coincided with her sports as well and she has just thrived lately. Isla loves to tell people she has a book with her poem in. She’s proud of herself and rightly so. We should definitely encourage our children to celebrate their accomplishments. We are very excited for Isla future. She’s very talented and now she believes in herself just that little more. Anything is possible.
