Hi Harriet, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us!
You entered our âMagic Mapâ competition earlier this year â how did you find out about it?
I found out about it at school when my teacher asked if anyone wanted to try doing the competition. I decided to give it a go!
How did you feel when you found out your story was going to be published?
I was really excited, and I couldnât believe that my piece of writing was going to be published.
What did you enjoy most about taking part?
I enjoyed the challenge of getting my story to be the exact number of words that I was allowed. Also, I liked hearing what my friends had written which gave me inspiration to write even more.
You have now turned your 100-word story into a 10-chapter book âHelena and the Dragonsâ â thatâs amazing! What inspired you to develop your story into a full book?
I just felt like writing so I thought that I could turn my story into a full book. As it was the summer holidays, I had enough time to write it. Each chapter took me a couple of days to write, and I love writing so I kept going until I finished it about 2 weeks later.
What was the hardest part about writing a longer story?
The hardest part was deciding what the plot twist would be, which I personally found a little bit tricky.
What kind of stories do you enjoy reading or writing the most?
I love fantasy books and exciting plots. My favourite series of books is Harry Potter. I have also always really loved the âHow to Train Your Dragonâ books.
Do you have plans to write more stories?
Yes, I have just started a 500-word story for a BBC competition. I will also probably write more stories when I think of some good ideas.
If another child was thinking about entering one of our writing competitions, what advice would you give them?
I would tell them to be creative, use their imagination and never stop trying!
Whatâs your dream for your writing in the future?
My dream would be to become an author or a journalist.
Read Harriet's original 100-word story below:
Terrorising
I stood outside the dark, foreboding cave. I just couldn't go in, but I had to. I took a deep breath and, fearing the worst, stepped inside...
There it was! The fearless, petrifying, savage beast! It had sharp, terrible claws, pointed white teeth, a tail shaped like a spear, two massive tucked-up wings and scarlet scales. As you can guess, it was a dragon.
It opened one of its yellow eyes. I stood paralysed in shock as it glared at me and bared its teeth. Suddenly, it began to breathe fire! I escaped, but the fight was not over..
