They’re the reason we read. You could have the craziest, coolest, most magical story idea in the world, but no one would enjoy it if there were no characters, or if the characters were bland cardboard cut-outs.

A good writer doesn’t just sit down, think of an idea for a story, then plonk some random characters into it. They think about what kinds of characters would be best for that story, or even better – they choose their characters first and create a story based on them.
