Wolf Road by Alice Roberts

A book review of Wolf Road, Alice Roberts' first fiction book for children

The author, Professor Alice Roberts, is a familiar face from TV, presenting several history series. Wolf Road is her first fiction book, and we’re grateful to Simon and Schuster for sending us a copy to review.

Tuuli is a 12-year-old prehistoric girl living and travelling with her ‘talo’ – a tribe of connected families. When she meets a strange boy, it’s the start of a new journey and maybe the adventure she has been looking for.

I’m a big fan of historical fiction and this didn’t disappoint. I was immediately drawn into Tuuli’s world with the vivid descriptions of the landscape. The author’s historical knowledge shines through, and I really felt like I was learning about life in prehistoric times including the beliefs and customs of the talo.

The author doesn’t shy away from the reality of life in this time with hunting and killing animals, and the dangers the tribes faced, which I think enhances the realism of the storyline. Tuuli’s story is engaging and thrilling, with plenty of danger and excitement to keep up the pace. It’s also a beautiful tale of friendship between not only girl and boy, but also girl and wolf, showing that differences don’t matter. Overall I really enjoyed Wolf Road and I would read more set in Tuuli’s world.

I think this book would be enjoyed by fans of The Last Bear, Leila and the Blue Fox, A Wolf Called Wander and The Wolf Brother, and would be ideal for ages 8-14.

Wolf Road is published on 3rd August 2023.
