Wordsmith – Your work, your say, your magazine…
Wordsmith is a quarterly magazine jam-packed with creative work from 11-18 year-olds. In every issue we invite budding young poets and authors to send in your poetry, stories, letters and artwork for possible inclusion in the magazine. It gives the opportunity for you to showcase your work to other people your own age and to express your views and feelings to others. We select pieces of work to win prizes in every issue and we set themes for you to write about to challenge your creativity.

Themes for current Issue...
Winter Warmers
It's soon going to be that time of year again. Time to get your jumpers, hats and scarves out and to keep warm in front of the fire. It won't be long before the shops are full of cards and presents and people will be thinking about Christmas time. To mark the start of the winter season we'd like you to send in your poems inspired by all-things wintry and festive. What do you love about this time of year? Is it the frosty mornings and the possibility of snow or preparing for Christmas with the family? Perhaps it's the warmth of a roaring fire and a mug of hot chocolate or shopping for presents. Maybe you don't really like winter as it's always cold and raining and you wish the summer would return. Whatever your thoughts about winter and the festive period, send your poetry to us marked 'Winter Warmers'.
A selection will get featured next issue and two of you will win a selection of books and some winter-themed goodies.
Food, Glorious Food!
Christmas can be a time of feasting and over-indulgence, but what food do you like most in the world? What can't you imagine never eating again? Maybe you are partial to some chocolate or have a favourite dessert. Perhaps someone in your family cooks a meal that you simply adore and you look forward to when they make it. Is there something you eat as a special treat? Maybe you don't have a sweet tooth and actually prefer eating fruit or vegetables. What is it about your favourite food that you like so much? The taste? The texture? Maybe it's a meal that reminds you of a holiday or time abroad. Whatever your favourite food may be, tell us about it in a poem. Send your entries to 'Food, Glorious Food'. We will print some next time and select one winner to receive a family ticket to Alton Towers Resort (as mentioned on page 4) and a book token.
Kevin Brooks' Workshop
For the third theme next issue we'd like you to have a go at Kevin's writing workshop on pages 12 and 13. Designed to push your creative boundaries and get you thinking about your writing in completely new ways, this is one great workshop. We will select three of our favourite workshop entries and the creators of those pieces will each win a copy of Kevin's latest book 'Naked' and they will be signed by the man himself! As if that wasn't enough, Kevin will be reading your entries and picking the winners, so what are you waiting for ... get writing! Mark your entries 'A Few Random Thoughts... Kevin Brooks' Workshop'. Stories should be no longer than 300 words for this and poems no more than 30 lines ideally.
Art Gallery - Scary Sketches
To mark Patrick Ness' exclusive feature on page 20 and the release of his latest book 'A Monster Calls', we are asking you to send in your creepy creative artwork. Monsters, vampires, witches or a creation from your own imagination, we'd like you to draw a frightening creature and send it to us for next issue's art gallery. Two people will win a copy of 'A Monster Calls' and some Staedtler goodies. Mark your entries for 'Art Gallery - Scary Sketches'.
