Young Writers donates £500 to Wessex Heartbeat
Beth Jordan's inspirational poem, 'No One Famous' - about Marcus Haw, her consultant cardiac surgeon, was published in Poetry Explorers - Poems from Hampshire with 10% of the sales promised to the charity. Wessex Heartbeat has told us that: 'The donation has been allocated to the Young Adult Cardiac Unit (YACU) Appeal to raise £1.4 million to create 24- bed unit at Southampton General Hospital for young adults with heart conditions. Thanks to advances in cardiac medicine, babies born with congenital heart defects are living much longer and as a result the number of young people living with heart conditions is rising. As young adults, they need an environment suited to their needs, where they are around others of a similar age and that helps them make the transition from the experience of a children's ward to that of a mature adult ward. This Wessex Heartbeat appeal aims to provide them with the best possible surroundings and facilities'. We wish Wessex Heartbeat success with their fundraising efforts and thank Beth and her family for helping us to support the cause. We'd also like to thank all the children who participated in the book and everyone who purchased a copy.
