Year 7... I have been in year 7 for a term now. So, I can say without a doubt, it isn't easy. There is the homework, the friendship groups (my main subject this week . . . ) the work in general!
Friendship groups - I would agree with anyone that says secondary school is a jungle. The teachers would be the flies because they seem to be able to get round the school really quickly and pop up when you least expect them! The 'cool' kids would be the leopards or lions because everyone is scared of them. The not-so-cool kids would be the giraffes and zebras and antelope. The 'Larry loners' would be the insects. Of course, no one knows until the second part of term which one they fit into. I am a zebra. I hang around with the people who have cool friends but they don't really talk to them; and have a certain place where they sit.
My little group consists of around about 10 people give or take a few. We sit on a little park-style bench in a playground called the 'quad'. (which I do not understand seen as it has 7 corners . . . !) You will get judged by the cool kids (or if you are one you will judge people) on which animal you are. So, here is a snippet of a scenario that happened at my school...
Lion1 comes over from where all the other cool kids are.
Lion1: Hey Millie.
Me: Hi, can I come over there with you and Lion2, with the other lions?
Lion2 and 1 whisper.
Lion1: Sorry you're not liked by people over there, bye bye.
Lion1 and 2 snigger - she is such a zebra!
As I said, it was not for that reason but because I am a Zebra. Out of school, both of them would talk to me and let me join in - at school, it's different because they can't be seen to mix with the zebras and giraffes!
But, being a Zebra is good. It means you fit into the teacher's section which they call: Well behaved most of the time. Does good work. But has a mess about now and then. Which - every student does! You ask a 6th former! They will admit that they have messed around in a couple of classes! This means that teachers are fine with messing around as long as you don't do it to much! As long as you do the work they set and bring your homework in on time!
It means that sometimes, if you don't bring in the homework, they may let you off because the other times you have done it... Whereas if you are a Lion, they think you always mess around, never do homework... So that, my friend, is NOT good!!
I hope you're enjoying secondary school!
Have Fun!
