What is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a noun in a sentence.

Examples of Using an Adjective in a Sentence

The box is large.

The shiny penny.

The sun shone bright in the blue sky.

A six-year-old child.

If a group of words containing a subject and verb acts as an adjective, it is called an Adjective Clause.

Example of Using a subject and verb as an adjective

My sister, who is much older than I am, is a writer.

Adjectives are used in poetry to create different effects, either for a reflective description of the noun or to create more drama within a sentence description.

Why don’t you try writing a poem using adjectives and enter it into one of our poetry competitions.

For information on poetry terms other than an adjective visit our poetry glossary – poetry terms.
