Birthday Bonanza |

Surprise!
Corin Reid (13)
Hands over my eyes -
It’s all gone dark!
It must be my friends
Having a lark.
‘What are you doing?
Let me go!’
But my pleas are met
With a cheerful ‘No!’
We’re walking now,
I’m not sure where.
‘Come on guys -
This isn’t fair!’
They’re sitting me down -
The hands go away,
There’s a cake and my friends
Yelling, ‘Happy birthday!’ |
Gone But Never Forgotten
Laura Keens (19)
If I could wish for one thing for my birthday
It would be to spend one more day with you.
You left this plane for the spirit world,
Hopping up those golden stairs.
I wish we’d had more time than this
But sadly it just wasn’t to be.
I miss everything about you,
You were my friend, my confidant.
When I was sad I came to you
And just held you in my arms.
You never judged or criticised me,
Just loved me just the way I am.
Looking up with those deep brown eyes
I fell into them always every time.
When it was the moment you came to me,
Showing just how much I meant to you.
I held you close, said I loved you too
And with this you took your last deep breath.
I know this is not a cheerful poem,
But this is all I really want.
To be with you for one more day
Before I have to say goodbye.
I hope in my heart you feel better now
That you are not in pain.
Frolicking with your friends in Heaven
Waiting for when we shall meet again.
For although you are gone from this world,
You are most certainly never forgotten. |

Birthday Bonanza
Bethan Knapper (14)
My best birthday of all
I would have to say,
Is when I woke up and
Shouted, ‘Seven today!’
I was greeted with family
And friends at the door,
Next thing you knew
There were more and more.
There was Grandma and Grandad
And Nana too,
There were cousins and uncles
And Aunty Lou.
There were presents
Piled high and maybe a card,
My brother was watching them
Keeping guard.
My favourite present
I would have to say,
Was having my family
There for me. |
Blue Themed Party
Ellen Davies
A blue door,
painted for the occasion,
supports a blue banner with ‘sweet 16’ written on it.
Blue stairs,
in a cascading waterfall,
littered with blue balloon ‘bubbles’.
A blues band,
playing blues songs,
plays on in the background.
In one room,
blue parcels concealing presents,
with blue envelopes containing unopened cards.
In another room,
on the table,
blue plates and cups sit on a blue tablecloth.
A giant birthday cake - already cut
is being eaten by blue painted lips
below the blue painted eyes,
of the birthday girl
in the elegant blue dress. |

Birthday Bonanza
Eleanor Gunn (15)
I have a birthday every year,
On which I like to be surrounded
By those I hold most dear.
I don’t care about presents
I don’t care about food,
I just want their presence.
They make me smile,
They make me laugh,
They enable me to run a mile.
So that’s what I want next year,
No jewellery, clothes or music
Just my family, and no tears.

Presenting The Birthday Wish List
Tanya Zhelezynakova (15)
Hey! My birthday’s coming up!
Here’s what you can bring.
Start from the beginning,
Please read the whole thing.
Alligator, crocodile (they’ll scare off the teachers),
Sushi pile, cookie pile,
Little furry cat.
That new dress from Topshop,
And the Russian hat.
Vouchers and gift cards
Will be handy, too
For a trip to Tiffany’s
Or some Jimmy Choos.
Give me some new stickers,
Nail polish’s good.
Please give me . . . the Tower Bridge,
Kidding, wish you could.
A menagerie
Would be really cool.
And while you’re at it, also,
A pocket game of pool!
iPhone and some CDs
Would be very nice
Maybe throw in a board game,
Some fortune bringing rice?
(I heard these things were true!)
Anyway, something that’s blue . . .
The sky, of course, if you love me,
But . . .
You could never afford it. |

The Best Birthday Present I Ever Had
Miranda Sadler (14)
Was it only a year ago?
I can remember only too well
The memory grows fainter with every minute that passes,
Fainter until it becomes too hard to tell.
My birthday was never meant to be a special day
For anyone else but myself
You could have let me keep believing, selfish and shallow as I was
That it really was only about me, myself.
But that day was for me and for you
Alone, it would have been so sad
But you showed me that the world didn’t revolve around me
It was the best birthday present I ever had
And now I can see that you were always right
And that I was always wrong
If only we’d have been able to stay there,
Nestled in the hills all day long.
For that is where you took me that day,
To a clearing on top of a hill
I remember a bumblebee humming softly in my ear
And an orchid flower, silent and still
You showed me, on top of that hill, that day,
That the world around me was full of life
And that I shouldn’t always be thinking about myself
When there were so many other people in strife.
The view up there was priceless,
The emotions running through my head were mad
And for all this, I thank you
It was the best birthday present I ever had. |
Birthday Bonanza
Jasmine Pepper (14)
It comes each year on the 21st April,
but when I was eleven, ’twas birthday heaven.
I had my birthday away in Florida,
but now I’m fourteen and my sister is seven.
I still remember that trip like the back of my hand,
and I would love to go back.
We had a miniature party in the evening heat;
the chocolate on my cake was almost black.
With plenty of family there with me
I really enjoyed that special day.
It will always be with me.
That memory will definitely stay. |

Birthday Bonanza: What Would Make The Best Birthday Ever!
Deanna Somers (14)
Maybe a present that’s not expensive
An ongoing gift like a charm bracelet
Or just nothing; just make sure we all live
Through the year or maybe get a new pet
Although I like the home-made gifts better
They have more meaning and last forever
From my Auntie Muriel a letter
So I can start my new book called Never
My friends would arrange a surprise party
We’d play spin the bottle and chase the ace
A home-made birthday cake would be hearty
Lots of food and a bucket just in case
The best birthday ever would have to be
Spent with my loving family; it’s free!
