I Was Here

The Essence Of Earth

Paper imprinted by ink;
The start of any creation,
Captivation and motivation leaping from the page;
Design and finally construction,
The achievement of conquering the last challenge.
But what is the final phase one might ask?
Only ones who have journeyed through this world to the next
hold this secret.
But what will never be held unknown,
Is the power of a cycle;
The continuous flow of life and death
A circle.

This is what you see when you look into the depths of my cauldron,
My eyes - your eyes - the future’s eyes;
Representing this fact wholeheartedly,
Our variety of looks may differ us from others.
But what remains in this cooking pot is the shape or our eyes,
Our honest, lying,
Loving, hating,
Beautiful, ugly,
Powerful, weak
Exquisite, exquisite eyes containing this gift forever.

What will continuously be in this time capsule forever?
The love for the world I left behind . . .

Inside my cauldron, an essence of Earth simmers;
Where the conjured ingredients of complication are included.
Dissolved by the heat of the sun,
Is the sprinkled salt from the polar ice caps,
It sizzles, bangs and violently explodes;
And this is when a more important ingredient is required.

What is the most important ingredient of all?
The love for the world I left behind . . .

Well done too, to our runners-up Lily Martin (11) and Catriona Murray (14) whose brilliant poems have won them each a mini digital camera.

Thank you to everyone who participated, as always we love reading your poems!

My Time Capsule

If I had a time capsule, I wouldn’t put the classic photo, Teddy or comic inside,
I’d put in the people that fill this world with pride!

I would put Nelson Mandela in, because he made us understand,
That the world is big enough for more than one species of man.

I would put in all the brave and fearsome soldiers that fought in World War I or II
As they saved the lives of way more than a few.

I would put in nurses and doctors, because they help so many lives
With their stethoscopes, medicines, tablets and knives!

I would put in the police, as they are very good,
They make sure that people are behaving the way they should.

I would put in all the charity workers, for helping the less fortunate to get healthy
And for helping the poor become more wealthy.

Finally, yes this is something I’d have to do,
To let them know who the capsule belonged to,
I’d have to put in a photo of myself!

I Was Here!

The things that define me, oh where would I start?
Would it be necessities, like my brain or my heart?
Or something less personal, like my 5ft 7in frame?
Or my flaming red hair that I struggle to tame?

Would it be a memory, the happiest I’ve ever felt?
No, I don’t fret about the cards I’ve been dealt,
I live in the moment and not in the past,
I just hope that any good cards don’t disappear too fast.

Would it be a person, like my parents or my friends?
I’m lucky my life is filled with those godsends.
The people whom I love, who make me laugh and cry,
Who cheer me up instantly, without even having to try.

Would it be a feeling? A thought? Or a place?
These fragile things, they vanish, so quick without a trace.
Maybe Disneyworld Florida, with the scent of sugar in the air?
Or the nicest thought I’ve ever had, that really shows I care?

If it were a limitless box, then I’d put in my feelings, happy or sad,
Because the feelings that truly define me have to be both good and bad.
The feelings of joy, happiness, freedom, bliss, beauty and love,
Although sadness, guilt and anger define me just as much as above.
I’d put in all my friends and relatives and lock them safe away,
Because each and every one of them has made me who I am today.

But if I had to choose one thing, the only one,
I would not choose the moon, the stars or the sun,
I would not choose a flower, the prettiest one around.
I would not choose the oceans, which flow without a sound.
I would not choose the water, that keeps everyone alive,
I would not choose my school, that encourages me to thrive!
I would not choose memories that fade like forgotten dreams.
I would choose a thing of beauty, the most amazing thing I’ve seen.

This thing you can see everywhere, it’s so simple yet unique,
It will never go out of style; it’s always über-chic.
It goes with everything and is brighter than the sky,
It’s contagious, but if you catch it, there’s no way you can die.
It’s the perfect way to say, ‘I was here!’ as it’s the most wonderful
thing to me.
It’s a smile, because a smile is the most beautiful thing you can see.
