Young Writers was established in 1991 to encourage the reading and writing of poetry by young people.
Young Writers’ books nurture interest and confidence by giving young people the opportunity to see their work in print in a series of regional anthologies.
The books represent a generation of voices having their say on a wide range of themes from home and family to the environment and world politics.

Young Writers are delighted to announce the opening of their new poetry competition for secondary schools. Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation gives pupils the opportunity to let their pens do the talking - on any subject from home and family, to the environment and world politics. Every young writer who submits a poem will receive a special Young Writers bookmark, and the best poems will be published in Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation regional collections.
The Young Writers editorial team will select poems on the basis of imagination, perception and expression. The young poets’ ages are also taken into account. Teachers are invited to submit as many entries as they wish, but only one per pupil, and each entry must be accompanied by a completed entry form. We view Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation as a creative writing experience and will endeavor, where possible, to include as many poems as we can.
Through The Eyes of . . .
Put yourself in someone else’s shoes - what is life really like for them? How do they perceive the world - and how do others perceive them? Try empathising with a blind or homeless person, a celebrity or someone on their wedding day. Or perhaps you could give a voice to those who can’t speak: an abandoned animal, maybe an inanimate object or even a baby. Your poem should express the thoughts, feelings and emotions of your chosen subject, positive or negative.
A World For The Future
Have you ever wished you could change the world? Most of us look around us from time to time and think how much better the world could be if just a few things were different, so if you had the power to alter the world for the better, what would you do? Maybe you’d see an end to poverty and war or would put
a stop to political injustices. Anything you can think of that would make the future a better place to live put it down in writing and share with us your hopes for a better world for the future.
Meaning of Life
Do you ever question why we are here or what our purpose is? Is it a money-orientated fight for survival or something more fairy-tale? Today’s youth are portrayed as troublemakers, disrespectful and lazy - is this really a true reflection of our teenage society or are you simply misunderstood? Voice your opinions in a poem and help other generations understand you and your meaning of life. |

Poems must be no longer than 30 lines, poems can be on any theme and in any style, please remember to ensure your work can be read clearly (you can hand-write or type your entry) and make sure your Pupil Entry Form is securely attached.
Please staple a completed entry form to the front of each poem, with the young writer’s name and address showing.
Put all the entries into an envelope along with one completed school entry form and send to us by 28th March 2008
